How to Trust a Liar: Instrumenting AI Execution with OpenTelemetry

Building an automated engineering journal sounds straightforward enough. Git commits provide facts, AI adds intelligent context, and you get queryable documentation about the history of your project without manual work. Except in development, the AI assistant lies. Confidently.

When debugging breaks down because your AI assistant hallucinates, OpenTelemetry provides the observability needed to understand what actually happened versus what your AI claimed happened.

The session follows Commit Story, an AI-augmented engineering journal, through authentic debugging disasters, using live demos to show how these lies could have been caught sooner. This talk will explore traces of commit-triggered AI calls, teach techniques to verify response trustworthiness, and share guardrails that help prevent AI deception in the first place.
