Henrik Cox used AI to solve wildlife conservation challenges proving that there's a lot more to AI than productibity! We caught up with Henrik about his amazing work and why he's excited to share his story at AI for the rest of us.
Tell us your story? When did you start working in AI?
Before working in AI, I had a background in mechanical engineering and product design. Throughout university, I was also building technologies for environmental and conservation applications. That led to my graduate studies in engineering management and commercialising technologies. I was thrown into the world of AI in 2019 at the very beginning of our Sentinel project, which I’ll be diving into during the session.
Why is AI fluency so important?
AI is now at a stage where the internet was a generation ago, and today we can barely imagine a world without being online!
What is one thing you’ve learned recently that changed how you think about AI?
Since the launch of ChatGPT and the term “LLM” becoming a household name, it is difficult to share how expansive and varied AI models are than just these versions. Particularly as the work we do in conservation involves the development of Edge-AI models, a whole other application of AI tools! Lisa Becker’s session "Beyond LLM-Washing: When other ML models are simply better" sounds like it’ll delve into this topic quite a lot.

Why are you excited to attend AI for the rest of us?
AI is in the hot seat right now and industries are diving head-first into getting the benefits from it. It’s going to be interesting to meet people and understand how it’s working well in their fields and what needs to be done to make the technology a better experience for all.
What can attendees expect to learn from your session?
I’ve been working on AI tools and the wildlife conservation field for over 5 years. It’s an interesting mix with a lot of fun stories that also sheds light on how technologies on the bleeding edge can be developed and used in places you wouldn’t immediately think of.
Which other talks are you excited about attending?
I’m looking forward to learning how to use GenAI more effectively from Cien Solon and Sasha Czarkowski, listening to Ana Filipa de Almeida’s experiences in building their AI workflow.
Danny Ivatt’s session in the Business Strategy Meets AI track on Product Strategy will be facinating, and getting a better idea of AI’s involvement in cybersecurity from Clinton Herget in his talk "Machine vs Machines".
I think Peter Gostev and Suhail Lakha’s sessions are also going to be a lot of fun.
